Amylase is a relatively small protein and is therefore filtered readily into the urine. The enzyme can be found in increased concentrations in the urine for longer periods of time than in the serum. An amylase content determined on a 2-hour urine collection is an excellent test for detecting pancreatitis.
An increased amount of amylase in the urine is called amylasuria. Increased urine amylase levels may be a sign of: Acute pancreatitis. Alcohol consumption. Cancer of the pancreas, ovaries, or lungs.
The normal range for amylase may differ from lab to lab. In a blood sample, the range is about 30 to 110 U/L (units per liter). In a urine sample, the range is 2.6 to 21.2 international units per hour (IU/h).
Urinary amylase excretion was found to be a more sensitive and reliable index than amylase concentration in serum or urine for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis, also of chronic pancreatitis and of carcinoma.
