Amylase is an enzyme that helps digest carbohydrates in food.
The pancreas and salivary glands produce most of the amylase in the body. A small amount of amylase in the blood and urine is normal. However, too much or too little amylase may indicate a disorder of the pancreas or salivary glands, or another medical condition.
The normal range is 40 to 140 units per liter (U/L) or 0.38 to 1.42 microkat/L (µkat/L). Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Some laboratories use different measurement methods. Talk to your provider about the meaning of your test results.
High levels of amylase in blood or urine may be a sign of: Acute (sudden) pancreatitis. A blockage in a duct (small tube) in the pancreas.
Avoiding alcohol, and taking all the prescribed medications are the primary treatments for high blood amylase levels, if you are being followed in the outpatient department, and you have not been diagnosed with any kind of pancreatitis. Follow all of your healthcare provider's instructions.
