An absolute eosinophil count is a blood test that measures the number of one type of white blood cells called eosinophils. Eosinophils become active when you have certain allergic diseases, infections, and other medical conditions.
Sometimes, eosinophils cause inflammation in specific areas of your body. When this happens, it's called an eosinophilic disorder or hypereosinophilia syndrome (HES). Specific eosinophilic disorders are named for the parts of your body that are affected.
Often, if you have an occasional low number of eosinophil cells, it doesn't pose a major threat to your health because other cells in your immune system compensate for the lack of eosinophils. Long-term eosinopenia is dangerous and requires immediate treatment from your healthcare provider.
