The aPTT is 1 of several blood coagulation tests. It measures how long it takes your blood to form a clot. Normally, when 1 of your blood vessels is damaged, proteins in your blood called clotting factors come together in a certain order to form blood clots and quickly stop bleeding.
High APTT levels in the APTT test can be caused by conditions like hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, liver disease, or certain medications. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve managing the condition, administering clotting factors or blood products, or adjusting medications.
Clinical Significance. The aPTT is a good screening test for inherited or acquired factor deficiencies. Inherited disorders including classic hemophilia A (factor VIII deficiency) and hemophilia B (factor IX deficiency, or Christmas disease) are well-known diseases in which the aPTT is prolonged.
