Antistreptolysin O (ASO) is a blood test that measures antibodies produced by the body in response to group A streptococcus (GAS) bacteria. Antibodies are proteins that the body produces when it detects harmful substances.
A positive result means that antibodies have been found. This means that you may have had a recent strep infection. But in 1 in 5 cases, this test won't show an increase in antibodies when you have an illness, such as rheumatic fever.
Generally, an ASO test value below 200 is considered normal. In children under the age of 5, the test value should be less than 100. Results will vary by laboratory. If your results show that you have an elevated ASO value, you may have a post-streptococcal complication.
High ASO levels usually indicate a recent streptococcal infection. Controlling a high ASO titer usually involves treating the underlying infection, which may include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, or other therapies to manage symptoms and avoid complications.
