ALT is an enzyme that helps the liver convert food into energy. High enzyme levels can be a sign that the liver is injured or irritated, and the enzymes are leaking out of the liver cells.

When liver cells are damaged, they release ALT into the bloodstream. High levels of ALT in your blood may be a sign of a liver injury or disease. Some types of liver disease cause high ALT levels before you have symptoms of the disease. So, an ALT blood test may help diagnose certain liver diseases early.

The lab report will tell you whether your ALT numbers fall within a normal range, typically about 7 to 56 units per liter (U/L) of blood.

However, a lower than normal ALT level could indicate a vitamin B6 deficiency or chronic kidney disease. If your ALT result is lower than what's considered normal, your healthcare provider will likely have you retake the test or undergo further testing to make sure nothing is causing your low level.

Symptoms Skin and eyes that appear yellowish (jaundice) Abdominal pain and swelling. Swelling in the legs and ankles. Itchy skin. Dark urine color. Pale stool color. Chronic fatigue. Nausea or vomiting.
