Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme that's found in the liver, heart, skeletal muscle, kidneys, brain, and red blood cells. It catalyzes a reaction between the amino acids aspartate and glutamate.

High levels of AST in the blood may be a sign of hepatitis, cirrhosis, mononucleosis, or other liver diseases. High AST levels may also be a sign of heart problems or pancreatitis. If your results are not in the normal range, it doesn't always mean that you have a medical condition that needs treatment.

AST levels above 40 U/L can indicate liver inflammation, or damage to the heart, bones, or muscles. AST levels above 1,000 U/L may indicate liver injury or hepatitis. Doctors may consider ALT results high if they are above 33 U/L in males and above 25 U/L in females.

An AST/ALT ratio of less than one (where the ALT is significantly higher than the AST) means you may have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. An AST/ALT ratio equal to one (where the ALT is equal to the AST) may be a sign of acute viral hepatitis or drug-related liver toxicity.
