The Bence-Jones protein urine test is used most often to diagnose and check on multiple myeloma, a type of cancer. Or an abnormal Bence-Jones test result may mean you have a type of malignant lymphoma. These are cancers of the lymphatic system. Multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells.
he 24-hour urine collection measures the total amount of Bence Jones protein related to the amount of tumor that is present. Either the kappa or lambda light chains (but not both in the same person) may be measured to help diagnose multiple myeloma and monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
The presence of Bence Jones proteins in the urine is usually considered abnormal and should raise suspicion for multiple myeloma or other plasma cell disorders.[6] The serum free light chain (FLC) assay is quickly becoming the test of choice for detecting free light chains.
